A Statistical Analysis of the Inguinal Hernia

Abstract
This study is a review and analysis of 161 cases of the inguinal hernia treated at the Department of General Surgery, Ewha Womans University Hospital from January, 1971 to December, 1978. The results were as follows: 1. The incidence of the abdominal hernia was 3.7% of the total patients. 2. Among 196 cases of the abdominal hernia, the incidence of the inguinal hernia was 161 cases(82.1%). 3. Male was predominated over female by the ratio of 8:1. 4. The location of the inguinal hernia: 121 cases (75.2%) in the right, 30 cases (18,6%) in the left, 10 cases (6.2%) bilaterally. 5. Indirect inguinal hernia is the most frequent from the inguinal hernia consisting of 99.4%. 6. The chief complaints were inguinal mass in 115 cases and scrotal swelling in 56 cases. 7. The¡¯ incarceration is 21 cases (13.0%), "strangulation is 9 cases (5.6%) and 18 cases (11.2%) of all patients had hydrocele. 8. 87 cases (54.0%) of all hernia were repaired by Bassini method, 40 cases (24.8%) by Ferguson. 26 cases (14.1%) by McVay and 8 cases (5.6%) by hight ligation. 9. The postoperative complications (14 cases of 161 cases) were pneumonia 3 cases, wound infection 2 cases, fever of unknown origin 2 cases, phlebitis 2 cases, sepsis 1 case, cardiac complication 1 case, subcutaneous hematoma 1 case, paralytic ileus 1 case and recurrent hernia 1.
